RAID is an acronym for Redundant Array of Independent Disks.

In a basic sense it is an arrangement of several hard drives with the intention of increasing storage capacity and reliability. A RAID causes several independent hard drives to virtually behave as a single storage unit. This causes the individual drives to behave as one larger hard drive, encompassing the sum of volumes of the constituent drives.
